Snoring and Sleep Apnoea

‘Good sleep’ requires an open airway, and an uninterrupted flow of oxygen to the blood stream, brain and tissues. It is crucial for maintaining good physical and mental health and general wellbeing.

Snoring and sleep apnoea are increasingly recognised as an important cause of chronic disease.

Among adults, occasionally snoring and sleep apnoea are caused by a single structural feature such as a blocked nose or short jaw. More commonly, however, ‘obstructive sleep-disordered breathing’ (the spectrum of changes from simple snoring to severe sleep apnoea) is caused by multiple factors working together. These include adult weight gain, increased fatty deposits in the tongue and neck, age-related tissue changes and sedative agents in medication and alcohol.

In its severe form, sleep apnoea can interrupt oxygen supply to the bloodstream and contribute to elevated blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, as well as accidents and injury caused by impaired daytime alertness.

At Evolve, our ENT surgeons will work with you to ensure you receive a thorough sleep evaluation and will help you explore treatment options to deliver a healthier and better rested lifestyle.
